Why would he switch? That actually cedes a lot of his current power to


Romney, or Collins, or Murkowski. Right now he is seen as being more of a swing vote than them because he caucasses with Democrats. As you stated, he is currently the most powerful Senator. With both sides cravenly partisan, essentially any legislation proposed by the Senate has to go through him. As events move forward, and each party moves farther to extremes, his position becomes more important, not less.
